Charles Hughes,70, lovingly known as “Chip” or “Chipper” to his family and friends, passed
peacefully on April 28, 2026, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was
born in Boston in 1955 and spent most of his life living in Massachusetts and Rhode
Island.
Charles proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years before
building a life centered around family, friendship, and community. He worked for many
years as a mail carrier for the Town of North Kingstown, where he became well known
and loved by the people along his route. Whether delivering mail or simply passing
through town, Chip never missed an opportunity to stop and share a conversation with a
friend, neighbor, or customer. His kindness, humor, and larger-than-life personality left a
lasting impression on everyone he met. A character at heart, he was always trying to
make the people around him smile and laugh.
Chip had a lifelong passion for motorcycles and cars, owning many over the years and
always enjoying a good conversation about them and the open road. He also loved
anything to do with rock and roll and often shared stories and memories from his
younger days in Boston. He had a deep love for animals, especially German
Shepherds, a passion he shared with his daughter. Throughout her childhood, he
happily helped care for the many pets they welcomed into their home together.
Those who knew him best described him as “giving, charming, witty, with a good soul.”
He had a big personality that could light up a room and a way of making people feel like
old friends. His humor and generosity will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege
of knowing him.
He is survived by his daughter, Kristen Hughes of Warwick.
Charles will be interred at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Services and
burial will be private. Arrangements are entrusted to the Keene-Brown Funeral Home.
