Dorothy Haffner Obituary

Dorothy (Courtemanche) Haffner, 92, of Burrillville, RI, and formerly of North Smithfield and Mohegan, RI passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 peacefully at the Overlook Nursing Home in Pascoag surrounded by her loving family. Born on February 8, 1931, in Mohegan, RI a daughter of the late Ovide and Lena (D’Alessio) Courtemanche.

Dorothy was predeceased in death by her loving husband, LaMar Haffner and her son, Peter Glenn Haffner.

She is survived by her son, David Paul Haffner and her daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Haffner) Cutone and her husband Robert of Barrington, RI.

Dorothy was the loving and devoted grandmother of Joshua, Nicholas, Benjamin, Madeline and Isaac Haffner, Michael Cutone and Huston Angus Haffner all of RI.  Dorothy was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild in June 2023.  Dorothy is also survived by her siblings, Shirley (Courtemanche) Sedlacek of McAllen, Texas, Carol (Courtemanche) Mannis and Ovide Courtemanche both of RI and predeceased by her sister, Rhea.

Dorothy attended Catholic Schools including St. Clare High School in Woonsocket. In 1953 she moved to San Diego where she met and fell in love with her husband, LaMar, who was serving in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. They married in San Diego, California on August 7, 1954. They moved to Iowa briefly, eventually settling in Dorothy’s hometown of Mohegan, where she and LaMar raised three children and many farm animals and pets. Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife of LaMar for nearly 60 years until his death in 2014.

Dorothy was an avid reader and poet. When she gave gifts and cards, she would include notes and poetry she wrote that brought joy to all who received them. Dorothy was a storyteller and loved listening to others’ stories as well. She was a devoted friend and had friends whom she had for more than eighty years.

Dorothy was the life of the party and loved to laugh. She was a kind and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend. She loved to entertain and always invited all to her many parties. Her holiday parties were eagerly awaited. In particular, her Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations brought family, friends, and neighbors to her from near and far for laughs, food and festivities.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Keene-Brown Funeral Home, 445 Greenville Rd., North Smithfield. Calling hours are Saturday, April 15, 2023, 9:30 - 10:30 AM. Her funeral will be held at 11:00 am at St.Theresa Catholic Church, 35 Dion Drive, Nasonville, RI. Burial will be immediately following in St.Theresa's Cemetery, Ledoux Drive, Nasonville, RI.
