George Martin Obituary

George E. Martin, 73, and affectionately known as "Santa George" of North Smithfield, Rhode Island, has passed away at Boston Medical Center South on March 9, 2026, following an illness. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late George and Rose Marie (Rosati) Martin and the husband of the late Larraine (Cote) Martin. Recognized throughout New England as “Santa George,” George embodied the spirit of Santa Claus both during the holiday season and year-round. His journey portraying Santa began in 1969 at the age of sixteen with a $12 Santa Suit he purchased from Sears. From that humble beginning, he was inspired to be selflessly dedicated to his craft of bringing joy, laughter, and the Spirit of Christmas to countless children and families. He made many notable appearances at local events including the Polar Express train ride in Woonsocket and Santa’s Wonderland at Bass Pro Shops in Foxborough, Massachusetts. He was featured in Christmas commercials for Cardi’s Furniture, appeared frequently on The Rhode Show, and was once showcased on the front page of the Boston Globe as Santa Claus. In addition, he was the founder of the yearly Cape Cod Gathering of the Santas. A longtime resident of Woonsocket prior to relocating to North Smithfield in the 1980s, George also enjoyed participating in community theatre with his daughter, gardening, fishing, and had a fondness for horror movies. George is survived by his daughter, Tiffani Martin of North Smithfield, RI and his brother, Thom Martin of Pascoag, RI as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also, George was the brother of the late Lena Imondi, Eugene Lacroix, and Rose McCollum. Services will be held at the Keene Brown Funeral Home, 445 Greenville Rd., North Smithfield. Calling hours will be Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 pm also at the funeral home. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of George may be made to The American Red Cross, PO Box 4002018, Des Moines, Iowa 50340 or www.redcross.org
