John F. Sweeney, 96, of Blackstone, MA passed away peacefully, April 14, 2018, at the Hope Hospice & Palliative Care of Rhode Island surrounded by his loving wife and family.
He was the devoted husband of 74 years to Leona (Thibault) Sweeney. Born in Millville, MA, a son of the late John & Hilder (Malmburg) Sweeney.
John was a Navy Veteran of WWII, he was also a founding member of the Blackstone Fire Department, Station #3. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and camping with his family. Prior to his retiring, John was a self employed, owner and manager of several coin operated laundramats in the Woonsocket area.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, John Sweeney Jr., Michael Sweeney and his wife Kathryn, Jane Hill and her husband Donald, Roberta Rainville and her husband Lucien and Andrea Walsh and her husband Bill, all of Blackstone; grandchildren include: Timothy, Christine, Mikey, Michael, Jeffrey, Jason, Eddie, Daniel, Stephanie, Melanie, Sarah and Amy. He is also survived by 5 great grandchildren and his siblings, Thomas Sweeney and Marguerite Yasick.
John was preceded in death by his daughter, Christine Sweeney, his brother, Harold Sweeney and his sister Mildred Baca.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, at 8:30 am, from the Egidio DiPardo & Sons Funeral Home, 75 Harris Ave., Woonsocket with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am in St. Paul's Church, Blackstone, MA. Burial with military honors will follow in the parish cemetery. Calling hours are prior to the mass from 8:30-10:30am.
